While summer is just beginning, it’s actually the craziest time of the year for us… Recruitment prep season!
Over the past few months, we’ve received more questions about letters of recommendation than ever before. According to the NPC, “a sorority letter of recommendation provides an opportunity for a member of a sorority to introduce a potential new member (PNM) to her organization and a specific chapter on a campus.” We know, it’s confusing, and our blog post featuring our Rec Letters 101 pre-recruitment workbook is a great spot to glean how-to information.
However, a few things have recently changed, and we’re here to give you the full run-down of the Dos and Don'ts of rec letters in this new era of sorority recruitment.
Check it all out below!
DO: Ask women you or your family know personally to submit letters of recommendation.
This one makes a lot of sense when you think about it! The people who genuinely know and care about you are the ones who can share the most impactful information about you, which will provide a sorority more insight into who you really are. Even better: Getting letters from alumni of the chapters of the university you plan to attend. Best: Scoring letters from RECENT alumni of the chapters on your college campus! Just remember that while you can still reach out to Alumnae Panhellenic Organizations for guidance, it is highly recommended that you ONLY request letters of support from personal connections.
DON’T: Send letters of rec to everyone
Sorority letters of recommendation are not required for participation in the recruitment process. The National Panhellenic Council has agreed that letters of rec can be difficult to come by for some and have adjusted requirements so that “a PNM doesn’t experience undue stress or burden to secure letters of recommendation.” While there may be a small group of universities who still recommend or prefer to receive letters of rec, they are not required at this time.
DO: Send your resume and photo headshots to the women writing your letters of rec
If you’re planning on sending letters of recommendation, it’s still important to include your resume and a few photos with your packets. This will allow the woman writing your letter to better understand your accomplishments - even though she should already know you on a personal level! Even if you’re sending a letter of rec electronically, it still makes a big difference to include these items as it makes it easier for alumnae to write you the best rec possible.
DON’T: Provide any sort of compensation for letters of rec
You should never have to provide additional compensation to a sorority alum for a letter of recommendation. This is absolutely against NPC policy and will not be tolerated. However, remember that a thank you letter can go a long way!
For additional information about letters of recommendation, visit the National Panhellenic Council’s website here or here.

To reiterate, our team 100% believes that attending an informational meeting hosted by a local Alumnae Panhellenic organization is one of the best ways possible to begin exploring the sorority recruitment process. Often called a "Spring Forum" or "Recruitment Forum," these meetings are hosted exclusively for high school seniors and their parents in order to introduce you to the structure, lingo, and financial obligations associated with sorority recruitment and sorority membership. You will also learn valuable information about the pre-recruitment process, and receive answers to questions like "What information should be included on a Social Resume?" "What does a Recruitment Information Packet include?" and "What's a Letter of Recommendation"—and more!
To help you find the Houston and Austin area spring forum nearest you, we've compiled a list of all of the local meetings taking place this spring. We will continue to update this list throughout January and February as we receive new information! If you have any questions regarding the district you fall into, we encourage you to get in touch with a Panhellenic representative using the website links below.

Going to the dining hall can sometimes be a pain! In many sorority houses, breakfast, lunch and dinner are a part of the living package. Whether it’s an in-house chef or a fully-stocked pantry and fridge at all times, you won’t have to go all the way to the dining hall for every single meal. On top of this convenience, you’ll always have a sister to eat with and will never have to worry about eating alone! It really feels like home.
While every day college life is great, it can be nice to escape and have a place to unwind without the distraction of campus. Sorority houses are close to school but typically located away from the hustle and bustle of it all. No need to worry about loud events on the quad keeping you up at night or early morning campus maintenance. Living in the sorority house provides the perfect balance!
There’s no denying that long nights at the library can wear you down. A dorm room or small apartment might not offer a comfortable space for studying, but a sorority house is filled with common areas for late nights in or early morning cram sessions! Plus, you’ll be close to your bed, snacks and study necessities at all times.
Your sorority sisters are going to become like family. From sisterhood events watching movies on the couch to holiday celebrations spent around the fire, always something fun happening at the sorority house! If you’re already there’s hanging out with your sisters every day, why not live together too?
Just when you thought the world couldn’t get any more technologically savvy, 2020 hit and proved us all wrong! We’ve learned that almost everything can be made digital these days (including school, work and even events) and have shifted the way we do things in order to keep others safe. When it comes to sorority recruitment, changes have been made at many universities with this in mind!
As you prep for rush this upcoming spring or fall, consider digital sorority packets as a fun, simple and efficient option! While standard sorority packets can still be sent to many chapters, digital packets are great too - and it never hurts to send both. After all, we all are accustomed to digital life!
So if a lot of PNMs are sending a digital sorority packet, how will yours stand out amongst the sea of resumes and cover letters? Check out our tips below!
No one is going to remember a resume or cover letter that looks the same as everyone else’s. Say goodbye to the black + white + boring template and hello to a little color and a lot of personality! If you have an eye for design, our fully editable sorority templates let you choose a look that’s right for you and simply customize/personalize. Available for Microsoft Word or Pages, these editable templates are totally irresistible.
It can be easy to get caught up in what you think a resume and cover letter should sound like and quickly lose how YOU actually sound! While it’s important to fit the essential facts in (check out this blog for all the deets), don’t be afraid to showcase your voice in an authentic way with a little extra flair. Sororities will remember the girl who was herself!
People remember things better with details. Instead of simply listing out generic things about yourself, dig a little deeper to reveal what’s really special! What makes you, YOU? These details will help differentiate yourself and bring you one step closer to finding your forever home.
In this digital world we live in, social media plays a big part. Whether you like it or not, a sorority might go to your social media accounts after reading your sorority packet to learn a little more about you. Make sure your social media displays what you want them to know and stays true to who you are!
After you send your digital sorority packet to alum, your work is not completely over! Take the time to follow up a few weeks later to ensure the information was received and ask if they need anything else. If necessary, follow up with a printed sorority packet too. This will allow you to stand out amongst other PNMs and keep your name at the top of their mind!
This year has been a whirlwind for us all! Our lifestyles have been totally flipped upside down, and we’ve had to adapt to the times in a unique way due to COVID-19. Due to the pandemic, sorority recruitment was very different across the country, but PNMs still trusted the process and found their way home. So what was it like actually going through recruitment this year?
We sat down with Maddy Worley, a freshman at Auburn University, and learned all about her rush experience—an experience that proves everything happens for a reason. Not one knows what the future holds, but it’s looking more and more likely that social distancing regulations will continue throughout the spring. If you’re planning on going through deferred recruitment, be sure to read on to learn more about her experience and gather some great advice below!
“Starting my freshman year of college amid a pandemic was something I never thought would happen to me. When this became reality, I knew I was in for a whirlwind. Yes, this year has been full of many unexpected changes, but I wouldn’t want to experience it any differently! I knew before arriving at Auburn that I needed to focus on being open and embracing the experience. If I was constantly trying to compare my freshman year to a ‘normal’ freshman year, it would lead to a bunch of let downs and I would never be able to find the positive in anything.”
“Sorority recruitment this year was unlike any before. Although, I had never experienced anything different, so to me it just felt normal! Being an out-of-state student, I had little-to-no knowledge about any of the sororities on campus, so it made having an open mind a lot easier. This being said, it did not make the process itself any easier. I came into the week with no expectations of who I might get dropped by and did my best to not let the drops get the best of me. But overall, I wouldn’t change a thing!”
“Prior to beginning the recruitment process, we were told to film a 1-2 minute video of ourselves displaying our personality while talking about our favorite quote, experience or book. We did this without knowing it would ultimately turn into our first round of recruitment! Following my arrival in Auburn, Alabama, I was so scared that the two-minute video I had filmed months ago wouldn’t be enough to showcase my personality to all 18 sororities...but I couldn’t let that get me down.
Round 1: We started off the week with an ‘Ice Water Tea’ round where we watched videos of all the sororities and quickly made our preferences.
Round 2: Philanthropy round lasted 3 days and we had up to 13 houses back. We were finally able to talk to the active members on Zoom and get a feel for their personalities!
Round 3: The virtual sisterhood round started with preffing up to 8 houses. In this round, we were able to hear about what the active members loved in a sister and some of the many sisterhood events each chapter held.
Round 4: Concluding sisterhood round, we made our preference of up to 2 houses which was the scariest decision of them all. Preference round was where things got deeper than they had been all week, and you slightly voiced to each sorority where you might see yourself running home to on Bid Day! Then, we made our preferences for our first and second house. From there we would find out our final home the following day and finished out the week with fun Bid Day activities!”
“Cons: Not meeting many people in our pledge class, having various technical issues, and losing the more personal connection.
Pros: Less stress of having to meet someone new in-person and more people were able to attend the actual recruitment process.”
“In order for me to stand out during recruitment via Zoom, I did two vital things. First, I always made sure I had my computer setup to video myself with a cute backdrop behind me. Whether that being a neatly made bed, or just a decorated wall with pictures/artwork that could spark a conversation, this was something that was important. Second, I tried to stand out through my jewelry! I made sure that I wore many cool pieces that would make a statement, which allowed several girls I talked to be able to remember me by.”
“Many precautions were taken in order to ensure a safe and successful sorority recruitment experience for all. For instance, our first round of recruitment was pre-recorded, and all other rounds were held via Zoom. By partaking in these two major precautions, we were allowed to have our bid day in-person! Although, in order for Auburn Panhellenic to make this day the safest, it was held in shifts in the Auburn football stadium.”
“I would tell a potential new member to not let any silly sorority letters define you! Be your true self and do not put on a front for any sorority. You will find your dream house where you can be your full unique self and not feel like you’re being judged by anyone else, but first and foremost trust the process. It will lead you in the right direction - always!”

The most important aspect of your formal style is, of course, the dress! Here are some of our favorite (affordable!) fashions for the season.
This sparkly gem from Lulu’s is sure to shine! The lightweight material is totally comfortable, and the fit looks great on any body type. We’re also loving this metallic teal color for the fall!
If you’re wanting an elegant dress, look no further than this bold number embellished with velvet and floral details. The deep v-neck and cross back spaghetti straps are simply sophisticated…and the dress is under $55!

Say hello to your new favorite statement earrings! The chunky, oversized look is a trend that is here to stay. For only $3, this is a deal that you can’t pass up.
Add a personal touch to your outfit with an initial necklace! This delicate piece is something you can wear every day, and would be the perfect addition to your sorority formal too. For an even more personalized look, you can create a custom necklace with your full name!
Dare to dazzle with this adorable mini purse! This clutch is the perfect size to hold everything you need for a formal and will add a touch of glam to your look. Choose between silver and gold, or try out both!
The cherry on top of every outfit? The shoes. Check out a few of our favorites below!
It’s so fun to add a pop of color to your look with a pair of cute heels. These strappy pink shoes make a subtle statement and can easily transition from fall to spring, and even summer.
Every girl needs a classic stiletto in her wardrobe. These gold pumps will go with just about any dress, and we have a feeling you’ll find yourself wearing them to multiple formals and events.
A taupe heel is something that will stay in your closet as a staple for years to come. In the cooler months it can be difficult to find a fancier shoe, and these closed toe heels are a great solution.
When you’re being viewed through a tiny box on someone’s computer, all they have to focus on is you and the small area behind you! There’s so much potential to personalize your background to fit with your mood, personality and overall vibe. Since your sorority sisters won’t be able to see all of you, let them into your fun space! Hang up string lights, photos or even a pretty canvas for a little extra pizazz. If you don’t want to go through the work of making your actual space pop, you can use a virtual background during Zoom calls and pretend you’re on a beach, in the city, or just about anywhere!

Your personal style can still shine online! Since only half of you is displayed during a virtual call, consider accessorizing with earrings, a necklace, or hair clips to add a bit of spunk
It can be so easy to mute your microphone, turn off your video and disappear on a virtual call. In order to stand out, try to be your normal self as much as possible. Speak up, act engaged, ask questions and provide insight when given the opportunity during online sorority events like virtual chapter. Long-lasting connections can still be made when communicating via your laptop!
Technical difficulties are inevitable, and that’s okay! Don’t stress about the little things. Instead, brush them off as obstacles that everyone else on the call has to handle too. To ensure your virtual calls run smoothly, make a pre-call checklist that includes checking your wifi connection, pulling up any articles or other information you might need to reference during the call, and testing your computer audio. When it comes to virtual life, we really are all in this together. No one will judge you for the glitches of technology!
When first joining a sorority, there will be so many fun things to take part in! One of the most exciting times as a new member is getting a big sister. A sorority Big is someone who helps a New Member along her journey while acting as an encourager, role model, and close friend. Before finding out who her Big is, a New Member is typically showered with gifts welcoming her to the sisterhood. It’s a pretty amazing way to kick off the membership experience!
For those of you taking on a Little this year, we’ve got some adorable goodies for you. Check out our Big/Little gift inspo below and spoil your Little in a special way!
The best dorm decor is personalized! Put your DIY skills to the test and create a cute canvas for your Little that she will genuinely love. Whether it's your sorority letters, a motto or even a funny inside joke, there are a lot of different canvases you can create and include in a basket for your Little! For a simple step by step tutorial, click here.
Survival Essentials via Thirty Handmadedays
You can never have too many cute mugs! We know that your Little’s dorm room Keurig will get a lot of use on early mornings before class and late nights studying, so why not top it off your basket with a unique mug that she will love?
Every girl needs a chic cosmetic bag for being on the go! Not only do our makeup totes help to keep things organized, they can also double as a great gift to fill with candy and other goodies! Check out Alyssa Revecho’s Youtube video for some more inspo on ways to make this gift oh so special.
If you’re looking for a quick all-in-one solution, consider a Big/Little gift set customized to perfection for your Little. Our packages include a mug, note cards, and a decal of your choice all wrapped up in a pretty basket!
The most important gift of all is making your Little feel welcome into your sorority! No matter what’s in your basket, your Little will be so excited to have someone as special as you to help her get acquainted with college life.
Sorority recruitment can be uncomfortable, overwhelming and downright confusing at times! We all know that committing to a forever home in such a short amount of time is kind of a crazy situation. And for all you 2020 rushees, things are even crazier with online events, constant changes and extra safety precautions in light of COVID-19. Emotions will go to a lot of different places during rush, and it can be difficult to separate your mind from your heart when making these big decisions…and that’s ok!
When you’re in the middle of the process, it’s important to stay open and remember that everything happens for a reason. While you may have your heart set on a certain house, we encourage you to still give Greek life a chance if things don’t pan out the way that you had hoped. The process really works and you have to trust it!
After an emotionally draining experience, there’s nothing more discouraging than ending up in a place where you feel like you don’t belong. Be mindful that no matter what letters you wear, you will find your fit within a sorority and meet people who will become like sisters to you.
Even if you think you know everything there is to know about a sorority based on your experience during recruitment, there’s still so much to learn and so many people to meet! During recruitment, you only have the chance to talk to a few girls and shouldn’t base all of your opinions of a sorority on those people alone. When first joining a sorority you aren’t so sure of, try to ignore any stereotypes or rumors you may have heard and take the time to get to know the people you will be spending the most time with—your pledge class. Real connections are made when you open yourself up, relax, and focus on being authentically yourself. That is what Greek life is all about!
Just because you’re in a certain sorority, doesn’t mean you won’t have the chance to meet other people! The Panhellenic community is filled with so many amazing women and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to spend time with other people outside your sorority and be a part of something bigger. From philanthropy events to Greek mixers and more, sororities interact with one another all the time and support each other in the best way. Being a part of the Greek community is a life-long experience that can truly make a positive impact on your world.
If you’ve given it a real go and still are feeling like something is off, you can always consider dropping your sorority before initiation and trying out the process again in a different way! While there are certain rules that prevent you from rushing twice depending on the circumstances, (check out this blog post for additional information) many sororities continue recruiting even after formal recruitment in order to meet their quota. If this is something that interests you, you can continue to visit houses, attend events, and see if another house feels like a better option for you! If you’re considering COR, just be aware that you must drop the sorority you initially accepted a bid from prior to initiation. For more information, check out the NPC guidelines here.
What you make of Greek life is entirely up to you! Every sorority has something special to offer, and we know you’ll never regret giving something a try before making a permanent decision. No matter the outcome of sorority recruitment, you’ll be joining a lifelong sisterhood and will make friends that will last a lifetime!
]]>Although the rush process is unique to each school, they’re all similar in the fact that you’ll list your top houses after each round to help determine which parties you’ll attend the next day. You’ll receive a score from every sorority, and you’ll give every sorority a score too! When you get to the final pref day, it’s important to rank your remaining sororities according to the best fit for you.
A suicide bid (aka single preference vote) is when a PNM chooses to put down only one sorority after the preference round of recruitment. This means if you don’t get a bid from that house, you will be cut from the entire process. All your eggs are in one basket, which is a very risky scenario to be in!
So is suicide bidding a good or a bad thing? To gain some perspective, we sat down with Maddie King, a 2020 graduate of Texas Christian University who pledged Alpha Delta Pi as a freshman, as she recalls the sorority recruitment process and her decision to suicide bid. Check out some insight from Maddie below!
“On my final day of recruitment, I had three houses left. Even though I liked all of the sororities, Alpha Delta Pi was the only one where I felt surrounded by people I could see myself building long-term relationships with and who would become more than just sorority sisters. I couldn’t see myself in any other sorority, so when it came down to ranking houses at the end of the day, I knew I would only be happy with ADPi. I also didn’t want to take another girl’s spot in a different sorority if I already knew it wasn’t for me.”
“The process can be confusing when you’re the one going through it. My Rho Gamm, who led me through recruitment, told me that if I only put down one sorority, my chances to get in would be super low. I learned later on that this isn’t true! Sororities don’t get notified if you suicide bid so your chances will be the same no matter what.”
“For me, sorority life was important but it wasn’t everything. I knew I would’ve been ok if I didn’t get a bid from ADPi or I could’ve participated in COR (continuous open recruitment) later on. If your heart is set on being in a sorority no matter what, I would recommend putting multiple houses down on your last day and making the most out of whatever happens. Suicide bidding is definitely not a safe option. I just knew where I was comfortable, felt a connection with the girls and went with my gut! “
Throughout Maddie’s college experience, she had friends in every single sorority and knew she would’ve been happy no matter the circumstance. However, it’s worth noting that one of Maddie’s good friends—her future college roommate and eventual sorority sister—also made the decision to single pref and wasn’t as happy with the outcome, as she did not receive a bid. If she could go back and do it again, she notes that she wouldn’t have made such a risky choice. After going through a semester of college, she knew she still wanted to be in a sorority and went on to rush Alpha Delta Pi later in the spring.
In conclusion, we encourage you to stay as open minded as possible to give yourself the highest chance of sorority recruitment success. However, everyone is different and only YOU know what’s ultimately right for you!
It’s no secret that the world is looking a little different these days. Our lives have been flipped upside down and technology has become one of our best friends! With the health and safety of everyone in mind, most Texas schools will be conducting fall 2020 recruitment in a totally new way. So what will that look like as a PNM?
Fall recruitment information has been released with little detail for many large Texas universities. And the truth is, things are still changing on a daily basis! Here is what we know:
Online registration for Panhellenic recruitment is open now until August 2nd and all applications must be submitted online (check out our digital templates for some inspo!). Recruitment is set to take place between August 17-24 with a combination of virtual events and social distancing measures for in person rounds. Depending on the current state, changes might be made to implement a fully virtual recruitment. Learn more information here.
In light of the current circumstances, Texas A&M Panhellenic has released a statement on how formal recruitment will be conducted completely differently this fall. Rounds will include virtual presentations, video messages in which PNMs will record a one minute video of themselves that each sorority will see and in-person events toward the final rounds. For more information, click here
While registration for fall recruitment is now open, TCU Panhellenic has not made any announcements on when the process will take place. Due to COVID-19, the recruitment dates are subject to change to ensure the health and safety of everyone involved. Click here for more information.
Fall recruitment at Texas Tech is set to take place from August 15-22. Students will watch pre-recorded videos and attend a number of virtual events throughout the entire process. Everything will be conducted online except for the final preference round, where a PNM can attend a max of two houses in person. For additional information, click here.

While everyone has their own fears and concerns, we were recently asked what it’s like to rush as a woman of color. To answer this question, we sat down with Maiya Burns, a 2019 graduate of the University of Texas who pledged Chi Omega as a sophomore transfer student. As a former student athlete, Maiya knew she wanted to join a sorority to find her place at a new school. Keep reading to hear some great advice and to learn how Maiya’s sorority experience shaped her into the amazing woman she is today!
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
“I was born and raised in Southlake, Texas and now live in Fort Worth, Texas. My family was originally from Ohio and moved down to Texas before I was born. Ever since, we’ve just been a big Longhorn family! I graduated from college in 2019 from the University of Texas with a degree in Exercise Science and am now working as a Project Manager for a college ministry on the TCU campus.”
Why did you decide to join a sorority at the University of Texas?
“I actually decided to rush my sophomore year. My freshman year of college, I played volleyball at a school in Florida where I tore my ACL and ended up having surgery and having to quit the sport. When I was looking to transfer to a new school, I had already seen my friends go through rush at other universities - none of them at UT. I had seen their experiences and it looked like something I could be a part of too!”
“When I transferred to UT, I immediately decided to rush. My biggest draw to Greek life was the team feel that reminded me of volleyball and having friends that would always be in my corner. I thought I could get that out of rushing a sorority, and I did! Going to such a big campus, it was kind of scary for me to not be involved in anything initially. At UT, about 10% of the campus is a part of Greek life so that shrunk the school down into a smaller capacity that I could handle. I loved the idea of having these girls doing school, college and life with me while I was away from home.”
How would you describe your overall sorority experience at the University of Texas?
“From beginning to end, Chi Omega shaped me into the person that I am. Whether it was my relationships with girls in my own sorority or other individuals in Greek life, it played a big role in helping me mature and figure out life for the first time on my own.”
“The girls that were in my sorority, some of which were my age since I rushed as a sophomore as well as the younger girls who were in my pledge class, made me feel cared for and valued. They turned into the girls I knew I could call no matter the circumstance. We often see sororities as large groups of girls who always party and indulge in the ‘typical’ college lifestyle. I think sororities are much deeper than that and serve a lot of different purposes. They challenge you personally and academically. My sorority was a big part of helping me pave my way through college. A lot of the girls that I was friends with in college I'm still really close with and I don't see that changing in the future.”
Is there anything you would change about your sorority experience?
“Overall, no. I think that choosing to rush as a sophomore was a really cool decision and I encourage anyone to do so as well. I was able to be motherly to the girls in my pledge class since I had a year of college underneath me, and it also allowed me to get to know the other girls in my sorority since they were my age. I really loved my experience.”
“Even as a woman of color, I was able to serve on our executive board and that helped me grow as a leader. It was great to work alongside other girls who were confident and fun. I had such a big heart for the girls who were in my chapter.”
What was the recruitment process at the University of Texas like?
“It’s kind of a funny story actually! My first day of recruitment, which we call open house at UT, I was actually the first girl in my line because of the alphabetical order we were placed in. So for all 14 houses I was the first girl each sorority saw. That was really fun for me – I hope each house felt like they were met with a smile!”
“I am extremely extroverted, and it was really exciting for me to share my life with a lot of different people. I think that being vulnerable and having those honest conversations with girls while you're in recruitment is really important to show who you are and why you think that this is something that you want to do with your time in college. Even still, looking back at my time during rush, there are some girls I met during that process in other houses who I am still friends with today. If anything, it’s a great way to make friends in the simplest of ways.”
What advice would you give to an introverted woman who is planning to go through recruitment?
“As much as I want to say don’t be nervous, I know that’s so, so hard. If you are introverted, that’s ok! They’re going to understand that and love you for that because I can guarantee you there are girls in every house who are introverted too. Whether it’s finding a connection with the girl you’re talking to and helping the conversation move along, I think that being willing to put yourself out there, even if it’s uncomfortable, can definitely be worth it in the end. It can be a hard process if everything is driven out of fear. It can be really good, although really hard, to be your most vulnerable self during the process.”
What fears or concerns did you have going into recruitment?
“So first things first, you're going to notice something different about me whether I speak or not. I didn’t fear that I would be judged for my skin color or my age or being a transfer, but I knew that those were things that each sorority knew about me before I even stepped into their house.”
“I was worried that those things about me would become a topic of discussion and would almost be a negative pull. However, none of my conversations made me feel judged and those fears were driven away very quickly in the process. I was able to get to know people and they saw my heart for what it was. I really do think there is space in recruitment to allow girls to really see who you are at your core.”
“Each sorority probably has their stereotype, but you can’t fit every single girl in a house into that stereotype. Don’t let that be a scary part of recruitment – every house wants girls who are loving and caring leaders. You will bring value to a sorority regardless of whether you look like the rest of the girls or not.”
What would you tell a PNM who is concerned about rushing as a woman of color either about sorority recruitment or sorority life?
“My biggest advice is just to give it a chance! I think girls can be driven away from it by being fearful of what the outcome could be or the fear of rejection, but I also do think having a woman of color in a sorority isn’t always the most familiar thing for that sorority itself. By just giving the process a chance, they want to give you a chance too. Don’t fall into this mindset that they’ve already written you off or want you to be a certain person for them. If you already stand out walking in just based on the way you look, I think there’s even more space to stand out with your personality with who you really are.”
“I would encourage everyone to be themselves – it doesn’t matter who you are. At the end of the day, you’re not walking through those doors to impress them or win them over. You’re there to find a group of friends. After being on the other side of recruitment as well, every girl that I made a connection with during the process stood out to me because they were themselves and weren’t putting on a show.”
Is there anything else that you like to add?
“I just really want to encourage any girl going through recruitment, regardless of race or how you think a sorority may perceive you, you will end up where you are best fit. If something doesn’t go right, keep trusting the process and understand that you’ll find a place to belong. A lot of girls can get caught up on Bid Day if they don’t get the house that they really wanted, but it’s important to give it a chance and take the opportunity in front of you.”

Social media allows you the freedom to showcase exactly who you are in a way that is unique to you! Sororities DO look at your social media accounts prior to recruitment to gain a little more insight into your personality and to make sure that what you are posting aligns with their values. However, it’s NOT about how many followers you have or your popularity online. It’s about who you are and how you choose to show it!
So what should you be posting and what shouldn’t you be putting out there in light of sorority recruitment? Check out our social media Do’s and Don’ts below!
Unfortunately, you don’t have control over everything that’s posted about you online, but you do have the power to make some adjustments! Untag yourself from any pictures or posts that someone else adds of you that you don’t want showing up on your profile. This is a really simple first step toward getting your accounts to look the way you want them to!
While you may think social media is something only your close friends will be looking at, what you post lives on the internet for everyone to find. Sororities, and even future employers, can see what you post, so you want to make sure that what you are posting is 100% appropriate. This means NO alcohol, NO revealing photos and NO obscene language. Your grandma does NOT want to see that! And sororities (and the alum on the receiving end of your sorority packets) definitely do not either.
Everyone can see what you put online, so it is important to adjust your settings and make your account more private and safe. Although it is okay to have your accounts set to public, it’s best to avoid listing any personal information. Be sure to remove any addresses, phone numbers or contact information from your social media accounts. Sororities will already have all of this info once you register for recruitment, so you so you don’t need to put it online for others to see!
It can be easy to get caught up in the social media bubble and share things that aren’t true to who you are. Just as it’s important to be yourself during recruitment, you should be yourself on social media! You shouldn’t try to fit a certain mold to get into your top choice sorority. Keep sharing things that are authentically you and have fun with it!
Your social media pages are a chance to let others know what’s going on in your world. Did you just win a dance competition? Have you started volunteering somewhere? Are you learning to play the piano? Sharing these life moments is essentially like extending your resume online and letting sororities know a little more about you! Share these exciting times to your feed or as Instagram stories and then pin them to your highlights. There are so many ways to showcase all the amazing things that make you, you!
Before sorority recruitment, take some time to look over your social media accounts and make sure they are an accurate reflection of your character. In this day and age, social media does have an impact, and what you put out there reflects who you are as a person. Be social and be YOU!
]]>After spending four years making incredible memories with lifelong friends-turned-sisters, it can be difficult to end your time as an active sorority member and begin a new chapter. While you may not be going to formals or having slumber parties in your Greek house anymore, a sorority can still do so much for you post-grad! It’s important to remember that Greek life isn’t just a four-year experience, it’s a forever one.
For most people, the “G” word is associated with job searching, career building and the start of adulthood. While “graduation” calls for celebration and excitement, it can also be a stressful time with a lot of change. Being a part of a sorority post-grad means continuing to have meaningful connections with individuals across the country and the world. You never know if a current or former sorority member knows someone who can help you land your dream job, or if a company you are applying to has a sorority alumna who will help you out through the interview process. A sorority connection can be a great networking tool to help you achieve your goals!
Sororities hold you accountable for staying on track with your grades, studying, volunteering, and taking the initiative to pursue what you're passionate about while you’re in school. Whether you are on your sorority’s executive board or not, being in a sorority helps you gain leadership skills that will last a lifetime!
After graduation, you will still have the opportunity to maintain those leadership skills by participating in regional or even national sorority organizations. There are local alumni chapters for sororities located in every major city, such as the Alpha Delta Pi Dallas Alumnae Association, the Chi Omega Downtown Chicago Alumnae Chapter, and many more! These organizations host meet-ups and are a great way to maintain connections with alum and active members in your area. Through this experience, you can help girls who were in your shoes grow the same way you did and meet new people along the way!
A large part of sorority life involves volunteering and raising money for an organization that is sure to become near and dear to your heart. Even after you graduate, you can get involved with the national philanthropy of your organization or donate your time to something new. These organizations frequently plan service days and volunteer trips that alumnae are more than welcome to take part in. It will always be important to give back—and it’s possible to have fun while doing so even after graduation!
Joining a sorority means gaining a group of strong women who have your back through it all. Those girls you spent countless hours clapping and chanting with during recruitment and binge watching The Bachelor with don’t just go away after four years. These women will be bridesmaids in your wedding, advice givers during tough times, and are forever sisters.
Post-grad sorority life also allows you the chance to stay involved with alumnae chapters wherever you are in the country. This offers you the opportunity to connect with your sorority after college and meet different people who share similar values with you. There really are sisters all across the globe waiting to meet you!
A sorority is more than just something to be a part of during college—it is an organization that makes a permanent impact on your future. Like everything in life, you get out what you put in. Stay connected to your sorority post-grad to discover the true meaning of Greek life!
]]>A sorority packet is the first thing a sorority will see before you walk through the door of their house on day 1 of recruitment. It’s an extremely important tool for alumnae AND for sorority women, because it helps them get to know your strengths, accomplishments, and passions! So if everyone’s sending them, how do you make yours stand out?
Creating your sorority packet from the ground up is a chance to express yourself and have fun! With over 30 designs and counting on SororityPackets.com, you can select a one-of-a-kind option that stands out from the rest. Whether you’re a girly girl who loves polka dots and floral or a preppy person who adores bold patterns, there is a sorority packet out there for you! Customizing your packet design to reflect your likes and interests is a memorable way to stand out from the crowd. You can even work with the Sorority Packets designer, Jessica, to create a one-of-a-kind packet design that’s completely unique to you! You’re not the same as anyone else, so why should your sorority packet be?
There are three types of photos to include in your sorority packet: the headshot, the three-quarter shot, and the full body shot. While it may seem like there isn’t much room to be creative with these, that is far from the truth! Make your photos stand out by choosing an outfit that makes you feel confident, beautiful, and the most like YOU! Hair and makeup should be kept natural and reflect what you look like on a day-to-day basis, just with a little extra oomph. To REALLY make your packet pop, choose attire that matches the color or design of your sorority packet for a cute and cohesive look. Little touches like these are what personal branding is all about!
It might sound cliché, but the very best way to make your sorority packet stand out is to be 100% authentic with each and every aspect of it. From the design and photos to your resume and cover letter, presenting all of the elements that make you, YOU, is what will set you apart in the end. Stand out from the crowd by including fun facts in your resume that make you unique. Did you go to a science camp? Win a random internet poetry contest? Attend an acting class? These one-of-a-kind quirks make great talking points in recruitment and will help you distinguish yourself and form genuine connections! Remember, this is a SOCIAL resume, so don’t be afraid to step out of the box and showcase your personality and interests. You never know who in the room might be able to relate!
]]>Sorority recruitment might seem like it’s in the distant future while you’re in the midst of planning for spring break, prom, graduation, and all of the exciting moments that come along with being a senior in high school—but it is far from it! Before the craziness of second semester senior life hits you in the upcoming weeks, take some time to slow down and prep for rush week. You’ll thank yourself later!
In the beginning months of the year, there are a few tasks you should check off your list in order to stay on track with recruitment planning. This includes cleaning up your resume, drafting a cover letter, beginning to get your Sorority Packets in order, and snapping those ever-so important sorority recruitment photos.
Sorority recruitment photos should instantly showcase your unique personality. This is the first thing a sorority will see when they receive your information and first impressions are everything! But there’s no need to stress about getting the perfect pics. We’re here to give you all the deets with some helpful tips and tricks below!
What’s your favorite spring outfit of all time? Whether it’s a flowy dress or a denim skirt that popped into your head, THAT should be your go-to outfit for your photos. There isn’t a certain “look” or mold that you need to fit into. Choose an outfit that makes you feel confident, beautiful, and the most like YOU! With that said, these photos are NOT the time to show off your prom dress or high school sports uniform. Save those pictures for social media! If you’re still wanting style inspo, check out this Pinterest board for some trendy looks.
While you want to look and feel your best in your sorority recruitment photos, it’s also important to look like you! The photos you provide are how sororities will recognize you when you walk into the sorority house on day one. If your hair is normally curly, keep it curly! If you like to wear a natural makeup look, there’s no need to add on false lashes for your photos. You’ll be the most memorable by staying true to yourself!
Some of us like to majorly overthink what we’re doing in a photo. What do I do with my hands? Should I pop out my hip like this to look cute? Guilty as charged…but no worries. Your sorority recruitment photographer will help you create a headshot, three-quarter and full body poses that are natural, relaxed, and flattering.
Are you planning a senior portrait session early this spring? This is the perfect time to snap those sorority recruitment photos. Bring some extra outfits so that you can check everything off your list at once! If you previously took senior portraits in the fall and your look has changed since then (maybe you got a dramatic new haircut or came back from spring break with a nice tan), consider booking a separate sorority headshot session in early spring. In order to send out your sorority packets by May 1, you should plan on taking your photos at least a month beforehand. If you’re looking for a senior portrait and sorority recruitment photographer in the DFW area, look no further than Sorority Packets owner Crystal DelaHoz. This former TCU Chi O knows her stuff and will snap the perfect set of recruitment pictures for you!

Sending a sorority packet electronically is a quick and easy way to send your information to alum! Although it is still appropriate to send sorority packets through the mail, many sororities are beginning to take a more digital approach. We’re here to help you craft the perfect “Sorority Packet Email” with these helpful tips!
Writing an email that introduces your sorority packet information serves the same purpose as a traditional cover letter. Use the body of your email to introduce yourself, share some important details and deadlines, and provide alum with essential contact information. There’s no need to attach a cover letter after doing this—the email IS your cover letter!
When attaching your resumes and academic information to an email, be sure to cover up any sensitive information prior to sending (like your social security number). You can easily black out personal data with a Sharpie before you scan it and attach it to your email.
Be sure that your resume and any other documents you attach to the email are saved as PDFs. Not everyone has the same fonts and programs on their computer as you do! If the person on the receiving end of your email doesn’t have the cute script font you used for your resume downloaded on their computer, a replacement font will automatically be loaded and will change the overall look, spacing, and formatting of your document. A PDF is essentially like “locking” your design so that it stays perfect no matter who’s viewing it—because you don’t want your creatively-crafted resume to be anything less than perfect!
Make sure that ALL your files have “clean” names that are concise and personalized.
This will make it simple for alum to quickly understand the contents you’ve attached!
Have you ever gotten an annoying bounce-back email due to sending a file that is too large? You definitely don’t want that to happen when sending a sorority packet online! Click here for a free online image optimizer, which you can use to downsize your photos while still retaining the overall quality. Select the “compact” option and rename the image using a clean name. This will also be useful for your rec letter writers, who will need web-size images if they plan to submit their RIFs online.
Sending an email is as easy as clicking a button. It’s a great way to communicate quickly, but an email should NOT replace physical thank you cards sent via snail mail. Two weeks after your emailed sorority packet is delivered, say “thank you” to those who helped you by writing and mailing a nice thank you card. This is polite and also functions as a way of gently "reminding" an alum to complete your recommendation if she hasn’t already done so!
While you may feel that sending everything electronically is way easier, every school does things differently. Do some research on the way your school handles sorority recs and follow the rules! If they accept both forms of submission, we recommend delivering your Recruitment Information Packets to alumnae in print and digital form. In other words, place a printed copy in their hands, but be sure to follow up with an email that contains all of your documents and photos as attachments as well!
Sending a sorority packet via email can be tricky business. While sending your information with the click of a button may seem simple, there are several steps you need to take to ensure the successful delivery of your recruitment information packet by email. Click the button below to download our sample sorority packet email template, which can be personalized with your own information!

Sorority recruitment is unique to each and every school! Although certain aspects of the process are similar across the board, there are always certain things that make recruitment special at a particular school. At Texas Christian University, this is no exception. Going through sorority recruitment at TCU was a personal experience that changed my life for the better. In order to give you a better idea of what rush at TCU looks like, I am going to share what really goes down each day of recruitment!

Welcome to TCU sorority recruitment! You’ve settled into your dorm room, said goodbye to your family, and are jumping into a great community at TCU. On the first day of rush, you’ll be divided up into small groups with a Rho Gamma leader who will be able to help you out along the way. You’ll meet a bunch of panicked girls with perfect hair and makeup (AKA, other Potential New Members) and will head on your way to house number one together! The first day at TCU sorority recruitment is definitely the craziest because you think you know what to expect, but you really have no clue. Be prepared to be bombarded with girls screaming and clapping the second you walk into your first house. It can be overwhelming, but it is also SO much fun!
Everyone will be given a t-shirt for Round 1 that you can pair with cute shorts or a skirt and your favorite pair of comfortable closed-toe shoes. It can be difficult to showcase your personality through what you wear during this round, so try to let your personality stand out by being your most authentic self! And don’t worry, later on during the week you can break out your trendiest outfits.
Day 1 consists of visiting six to seven houses along with small breaks and lunch. It’s going to be hot (because it’s Texas in August), so be prepared with essentials like water, makeup for touch ups, and snacks. You’ll be given fruity drinks at each house in order to stay hydrated and don’t be afraid to chug those down too! Round 1 is all about getting a feel for every sorority and it can be difficult to remember each house you visit due to adrenaline—so be sure to take notes along the way.
Bonus Tip: Jot down your notes in your PNM book so you can keep the sororities organized! A Recruitment Notebook is also included as a free download with the purchase of our eBook, Everything You Need to Know About Sorority Recruitment!
Day 2 is a continuation of Round 1, and you will get to visit the rest of the sorority houses on campus. You’ll still be wearing the same t-shirt and more screaming in your face will inevitably happen. I know, it sounds emotionally draining (and it is). At the end of Day 2, you will meet back up with your recruitment group and rank your favorite houses according to your current top 10 and bottom 3. This is why it’s so important to take notes so you don’t forget the houses you visited on Day 1!
Day 3 is the day you finally get to showcase your style! Think casual cute with shorts and a flowy top. You’ll be separating from your group on this day and will get your own personalized schedule. Disclaimer: You WILL be cut from houses on this day…but try not to get discouraged. Even if you are cut from some of your favorite houses, trust the process! It can be really upsetting, but stick with it because it does work out in the end.
This round is all about philanthropy and you will be asked a ton of questions about service and what you are passionate about. The sorority you are visiting will also take the time to talk about their philanthropy with you, and you’ll be able to learn even more about them! At the end of this day you will rank your remaining top 6 houses. Get a good night's sleep after this day if you can.
The second to last day is here! It’s time to break out your favorite sundress and wedges. By this point, there are probably a couple houses that you have your heart set on. When you receive your schedule for the day, get excited! This is the day you will get to talk about any leadership positions you’ve had and discuss the ways you want to get involved at TCU. You should focus on what houses you feel the most comfortable in at this point and make it a goal to have genuine conversations! At the end of this day, you will rank your remaining top 3 houses. Things are getting REAL!
The last day of recruitment was my favorite when going through the process and is still my favorite on the other side of it all. Throw on your best pair of heels and a cocktail dress and get ready to be emotional. During preference round, you go to each of your remaining houses for about an hour and will get the chance to talk in-depth with one or two chapter members. Things can get real as you’re tired, potentially sick, and emotionally a little unstable. At this point, be sure to tell the house that you feel the most comfortable in that you LOVE them. They want you in their house, and you need to express interest back! At the end of the day, you will write down ALL of the houses you would accept a bid from. DO NOT suicide bid! (“Suicide bidding” is defined as indicating that you would only be willing to accept a bid from one house.) This can hurt you in the process and is super risky.
And now you made it through recruitment at TCU!
The day that you never thought would come is here! Throw on some jean shorts and a t-shirt and get ready to RUN! There’s nothing like that moment of opening your bid card and seeing those letters you’ve been dreaming about all week beside your name. You’ll get your very first sorority shirt and will run down the commons to meet your new sisters! The day will feature a super fun activity with your new sorority and you’ll be able to really get to know everyone. It’s your time to relax and enjoy all the hard work you put in this week! YOU DID IT! Welcome to the best years of your life.

Connections, connections, connections! Making connections may be super important when applying for future internships or jobs, but they are a totally different story when it comes to sorority recruitment. You don’t need to have connections before going through recruitment, but rather should focus on the chance to make connections throughout the process. Sorority recruitment is not about who you KNOW, it’s about who you ARE!

When I first came to TCU all the way from Illinois, I didn’t know a single person. I chose to go through recruitment in hopes of finding a group of friends I could lean on when I was homesick and create a new home for myself in Texas. However, I was also scared that not having any connections in Greek life would prevent me from getting a bid. This was not the case—and I’m so grateful for it!
Greek life is designed to help you meet people, and in order to find your best fit, it is so important to be yourself throughout the recruitment process. When you’re being yourself, you can connect with people you have things in common with! Sororities look for individuals who have personalities, interests, and values that align well with their chapter as a whole. Although it might feel reassuring to go into recruitment knowing someone in a sorority, it's best to focus on the connections you are going to make throughout the process and not the ones you already have. You can do it all on your own! By having meaningful conversations and making it a goal to connect on a deeper level, you will find your fit!
Not knowing anyone prior to recruitment also allowed me to have a completely open mind throughout the process. I had no preconceived opinions about any of the sororities and was able to decide which houses were best for me based solely on the conversations I had in each house. I based my decisions on the connections I made during recruitment week and followed my gut instinct—and I am so glad that I did! I ended up in a house with supportive sisters and found my home away from home all on my own.
It’s okay to be nervous about not knowing anyone in Greek life, but remember that the majority of people going through recruitment alongside you don’t know anyone either. Don’t forget to talk with people around you going through recruitment too! I met some of my best friends during rush week by starting a conversation while standing in line before going into a house and bonding over random things. The experience is what you make of it! If you stay true to your authentic self, you’ll end up where you’re meant to be! I’m so glad that my nerves didn’t get the best of me, and I can truly say that sorority life has been one of the greatest parts of my college career.

Sorority recruitment is all about having memorable conversations! PNMs and chapter members are both on a mission to discover the perfect fit during recruitment week. In order to find your home away from home in a sorority, genuine connections are key! Here are some conversation tips for recruitment week that will help your personality shine through despite feeling a few (totally normal) jitters.
During recruitment, you will be bombarded with tons of questions about yourself. Chapter members want to get to know you, but they also want to see that you are interested in them, too! When you’re approached by a chapter member, talk to her like a friend and get to know her thoughts. It’s important to remember that a conversation is a two-way street—and so is recruitment. The more questions you ask, the more you will understand what the sorority is all about and the better the connections you will make!
Listening is SO important in any conversation. Stay true to who you are and let the talking flow naturally instead of rehearsing questions or memorizing your resume. Chapter members get nervous too, and they want to be able to feel like they can have a normal conversation with you. The whole point of recruitment is to see where you feel most comfortable and who you get along with best! Do your best to stay engaged in the moment rather than resorting to scripted answers or memorized lines.
There’s nobody who understands the stress of recruitment better than chapter members since they’ve already been through it! However, be respectful when you’re visiting a house and try not to bring up another sorority. Each house has worked really hard to make recruitment a great experience for you, and they want to showcase how great their sorority is! It’s okay to talk about your feelings about recruitment in general, but avoid sharing any specifics about your visits to other houses. Be kind, polite, and gracious to everyone you talk to.
After the basic get-to-know you questions, ask questions about the chapter member to discover what you have in common. Whether it be a music artist you both like or a snack you’re both obsessed with, finding a commonality will make you even more memorable! It’s also a great way to break the ice and keep the conversation flowing naturally.
A long day of talking can cause a lot of exhaustion! You may be asked the same questions house after house and it can be difficult to keep the enthusiasm up. It’s normal to get tired after a few parties and lose some steam along the way. Keep your energy up by bringing snacks and water in your purse and doing a little mental reset before entering the next party! Enthusiasm goes a long way, so treat every conversation like it’s your first one.
Conversations during recruitment can seem endless at times. Trust the system and be true to yourself and you will end up where you’re supposed to be! Each sorority has its own way of choosing sisters, so don’t stress yourself out about the process. Be genuine, smile, and have fun through it all! It will be a time to remember.

Recruitment is a unique process for every single individual. Whether you’re rushing as a freshman, an upperclassman, or a transfer student, the experience is entirely what you make of it! Participating in Greek life offers the opportunity to meet new people and get more connected with your school. For transfer students, going Greek can help you adjust to your new environment while making lifelong friends. Going through recruitment as a transfer student is not without challenges, though. Rise above recruitment worries with these tips for going through recruitment as a transfer student!

As a transfer student, you should look at recruitment as a fun way to meet new people! It can be overwhelming adjusting to a new routine in a new place. Rather than targeting a specific sorority you want to join, try to be open minded throughout the process and stay focused on meeting women who will support and empower you, and vice versa. This will allow you to fully appreciate and enjoy the recruitment process while gaining potential sisters...as well as friends in other sorority houses!
Because you’re not an 18-year-old freshman anymore, you have the opportunity to showcase your involvement at your previous school and really share who you are during recruitment on your social resume and in rush week conversation. This can set you apart from others and makes you stand out. You’re more confident in what you want out of a sorority and out of college life in general as a transfer student. Use your maturity to your advantage and strut your stuff!
Even as a transfer student, it’s important to send in sorority recommendations and use your connections. If you already know a few Greek students at your new school, talk to them about their experiences to get a better idea of what Greek life is like on your campus. Getting involved through other campus organizations is another great way to meet people and better understand your new school. You don’t have to go in blindly!

Every school has different recruitment policies, so feel free to reach out directly to the appropriate office on your campus and ask for more information about what it’s like to rush as a transfer student. This will ease your stress and let you know exactly what to expect!
Whether you’re a freshman, a transfer student, or an upperclassman going through recruitment for the second time, being yourself during recruitment is the most important thing. Rather than memorizing a script or treating the recruitment process like a job interview, keep your focus on staying relaxed and having genuine conversations to find the perfect fit for you!
You’ve already taken the leap and transferred to a new school. Don’t be afraid to take another leap and go through sorority recruitment! A sorority can help you find your place at a new school and, regardless of the outcome, you will definitely meet some amazing people along the way.

Sorority life has been around for hundreds of years. It is a tradition unlike any other that you can share with friends, family, and people you meet along the way. Each sorority experience is unique, and although times have changed, a legacy will always be special. Even if you grew up around loved ones who raved that their sorority was the best of them all, when going through recruitment, having an open mind is essential to finding YOUR best fit.
If you are a legacy getting your social resume, cover letter, and recommendations together for sorority recruitment, you may be questioning whether or not you should list your legacy information. There are a lot of rumors going around that listing legacy information can hurt you (and might even prevent you from getting into a different sorority than your legacy house), and we’re here to set the record straight!
Being a legacy means your mom, sister, or grandmother pledged a sorority when they were in college. In addition, most sororities give legacy status to women with stepmothers, but aunts and cousins do not count. They would, however, make great rec letter writers!
Read more about how moms can support their legacy daughters during sorority recruitment here.
Each sorority handles legacies in a completely different way and has their own recruitment policies. Listing legacy affiliations on your social resume is a common practice, and will help the alum writing your rec letters to make the most informed introduction possible to the chapter members of your legacy house.
However, being a legacy does not mean you are automatically “in” or guaranteed to receive a bid to your legacy house. If you don’t meet the GPA minimum, leadership skills, or qualifications a sorority is looking for, they won’t accept you, even if you are a legacy.

Don’t be afraid to list that you’re a legacy on your social resume based on horror stories you might have heard. You shouldn’t hide who you are! Sororities know that you are NOT your mom, your sister, or your grandmother. YOU are YOU! While you may initially feel loyalty to a sorority you are a legacy for because you grew up around it, in reality, that house might not be the best fit for you.
I believe that being a legacy helps get you to a certain point in recruitment, but will only get you so far. When you get toward the end of the process, choosing a sorority should come down to determining where you feel the most at home. If you make bonds with sisters in a house you aren’t a legacy for, odds are they will feel the connection too and will fight for you! Be honest with the chapter members you talk to during recruitment and tell the houses you love how you feel about them, without saying anything negative about any other houses. If you do feel that the house you are a legacy for is the one for you, be sure to let them know!
At the end of the day, listing legacy information on your sorority recruitment resume is a personal choice. Be sure to look up the policies for the school you are attending, do your research, and consult with your local Alumnae Panhellenic Organization for more guidance.
On the other hand, if you’re not a legacy, don’t let that hold you back for one second. When I went through recruitment at TCU, I had no legacy connection and was afraid that I wouldn’t get into a sorority because of it. I have learned that sorority life is for anyone looking to be a part of a lifelong sisterhood and develop meaningful friendships! You don’t have to have a pre-existing connection to get into a sorority—you have the ability to pave your own path. Start your own legacy!

Dirty Rush is a confusing term that is often thrown around in the sorority world. Recruitment can be a stressful time because you’re meeting new people and figuring out your way in a new environment. You shouldn’t have to worry about getting in trouble on top of that! We’re here to help and give you the inside scoop on what Dirty Rush really is and how you can avoid it. That’s one less thing to worry about!
On every college campus with a Greek community, there is a College Panhellenic Council that makes sure each sorority is following the rules set in place on a national scale. The National Panhellenic Council makes these rules to ensure a smooth and fair recruitment process for everyone involved. It may seem boring, but these rules are super important! Dirty Rush occurs when sororities break those rules, which is definitely not allowed.
So, what might Dirty Rush look like to a Potential New Member during recruitment? What are some of those rules? Here is a list of some situations that could fall under the category of "Dirty Rush" during or prior to sorority recruitment:
Being promised a bid or being guaranteed that you will get invited back to another recruitment round.
Recruiters are absolutely not allowed to say things like, “See you tomorrow” or “I can’t wait to see you on bid day!” and there is a reason for that. These statements can lead a PNM to believe she is 100% being invited back to a particular house, even though there is no way to guarantee a return invitation as many factors can impact the final outcome. In short, you can’t be promised a bid!
Being contacted by or contacting a sorority member before/during recruitment.
Formal recruitment really works! It can be tempting to try to get the “in” through DM’ing someone on social media or walking up to a girl in a coffee shop who is wearing a sorority shirt and introducing yourself. Technically, however, this is against the rules of recruitment. Trust the process and know that you will have plenty of time to showcase your personality during recruitment week...without breaking any rules. On the flip side, sorority members are not supposed to be contacting you either. That is a big N-O!
Receiving/sending gifts.
A sorority is not allowed to send any gifts or notes that may influence you to join their sorority. Potential New Members aren’t allowed to bribe sororities with gifts either! You don’t want to be in a sorority that gives you a bid solely based on the fact that you sent them cookies during recruitment, anyway. The goal is to join a sisterhood that's all about loving you for your personality...not your presents!
Spreading rumors about other sororities on campus.
Recruitment is a very personal process. It may be tempting to express your opinions about houses to other Potential New Members or to recruiters during a formal recruitment week conversation, but it’s important to keep these things to yourself. It’s never okay to bad-mouth another sorority—we’re all one big Panhellenic family, after all! Focus on each sorority while you're at their house, and give everyone a chance. You never know where you’ll end up!
"Dirty Rush" is certainly the exception, and not the rule. If any of these things do happen to you, though, don’t worry! Instead, if you think you’re experiencing dirty rushing, the best thing to do is go to a designated Recruitment Counselor (often called a Rho Chi or Rho Gamma during recruitment week) and work together to decide what your next step should be. Don’t discuss your concerns with any other Potential New Members—go straight to someone official who will help you handle things the proper way and get you back on track to have a successful and enjoyable recruitment experience!
