How to be Yourself Virtually During Greek Events and Sorority Zoom Calls!

Exploring the virtual world is something we’re all new to in light of social distancing and COVID-19 precautions, and everyone’s doing their best to adapt to the new normal. Currently, we’re living in a world of virtual events, drive-through birthday parties and online sorority recruitment...and as a result, we’re communicating through screens more than ever before. At this point, we know that it’s not always easy to be yourself online. Whether you’re attending a sisterhood event or a Greek philanthropy fundraiser, there are some things you can do to embrace the virtual space and showcase your personality in a totally unique way—even via Zoom!

Personalize your space

When you’re being viewed through a tiny box on someone’s computer, all they have to focus on is you and the small area behind you! There’s so much potential to personalize your background to fit with your mood, personality and overall vibe. Since your sorority sisters won’t be able to see all of you, let them into your fun space! Hang up string lights, photos or even a pretty canvas for a little extra pizazz. If you don’t want to go through the work of making your actual space pop, you can use a virtual background during Zoom calls and pretend you’re on a beach, in the city, or just about anywhere!

Accessorize

Your personal style can still shine online! Since only half of you is displayed during a virtual call, consider accessorizing with earrings, a necklace, or hair clips to add a bit of spunk

Don’t fade into the background

It can be so easy to mute your microphone, turn off your video and disappear on a virtual call. In order to stand out, try to be your normal self as much as possible. Speak up, act engaged, ask questions and provide insight when given the opportunity during online sorority events like virtual chapter. Long-lasting connections can still be made when communicating via your laptop!

Embrace the obstacles

Technical difficulties are inevitable, and that’s okay! Don’t stress about the little things. Instead, brush them off as obstacles that everyone else on the call has to handle too. To ensure your virtual calls run smoothly, make a pre-call checklist that includes checking your wifi connection, pulling up any articles or other information you might need to reference during the call, and testing your computer audio. When it comes to virtual life, we really are all in this together. No one will judge you for the glitches of technology!
