What's Included in a Recruitment Information Packet?

We know this makes us sound completely old, but “back in the day,” high school seniors gathered letters of recommendation during the summer and sorority recruitment began in the fall. Today, many colleges host orientation events for freshman during the summer months which means that the pre-recruitment process begins much earlier. Other things have changed, too. Instead of asking mom to take a picture by the Crepe Myrtle in the backyard (not that we're speaking from personal experience or anything), senior girls frequently bring special outfits to their senior portrait sessions so that they have the option of including professional prints in their sorority recruitment packets. And instead of mailing a basic cover letter along with SAT scores and academic information, girls are...

Sorority Recruitment Advice for Moms: How to Support Your Daughter During Rush Week!

We spend a lot of time talking directly to girls preparing to go through sorority recruitment, and most of our blog posts and Sorority Scoop newsletters are focused on what the process looks like from a rushee's perspective. Which makes sense, right? This is YOUR rush experience, and we want to do everything we can to help you knock it out of the park. But with that said, we recognize that there's another party who has vested interest in the outcome of your rush week.  From the first day of Kindergarten to the first round of rush, she's the one you've always trusted to help pick out the perfect outfit. She gives the best advice, so naturally she's the best person to debrief with after every recruitment party. She's...

You fielded a TON of questions and shared a lot about yourself...but you can't remember the name of the person you just spent the last fifteen minutes talking to. You know what almost everyone's favorite talking point is? Themselves. And that includes the sorority women you'll be meeting this fall during rush week!...

Sorority Rush Advice NOT to Take

We know that many of you are still in the process of sending off your sorority packets and gathering Recs + Letters of Support, which is great! Somehow, though, it is already MID JUNE. Meaning the start of fall recruitment is right around the corner. (What?) With that said, over the next few weeks we'll begin to really dig into the ins and outs of rush week. RUSH ADVICE YOU SHOULDN'T BE TAKING 1. "Avoid bringing up the five 'B Words': Boys, Ballots, Booze, Beliefs, and Bucks." Okay...this is a "yes and no" kind of thing. The "B Words" list—comprised of topics that PNMs should supposedly "never ever discuss" during recruitment week—has been circulating for years now. To be fair,...

How to Write a Cover Letter for Sorority Recruitment

We've all heard it before—"You'll never get a second chance to make a first impression." And that's exactly why we're such advocates of including a cover letter with each and every sorority packet you send out the door!  In addition to being a polite and professional inclusion, your cover letter is an excellent chance for you to share important information with the women completing a RIF and LOS on your behalf. With that said, let's break down the key components of a stellar sorority cover letter! FIRST THINGS FIRST Your cover letter should be addressed to the women completing your recommendations, NOT the sorority houses those recommendations will be forwarded on to. The purpose of a cover letter is to introduce yourself, share the "why" behind your...
